Florence RSD was originally formed to serve the unincorporated community of Florence IN. Due to the opening of Belterra Casino & Resort in 2000, the Florence Regional Sewage District underwent a major upgrade and expansion to its wastewater treatment plant and collection system. The wastewater facility was converted from a 0.03MGD controlled discharge waste stabilization lagoon system to a 0.23MGD oxidation ditch treatment plat. The two remaining lagoons were converted to digested sludge storage lagoons.
In 2002, the FRSD began a two part sewer expansion project that would ultimately extend sewer service to the Florence/Markland areas of Switzerland County. Phase I of the “Markland Project” was completed in the summer of 2003 and ended at Highway 101. Phase II extended service along Highway 156 to the community of Markland.
